The NHS is set to pay a steep £3m to help with erectile dysfunction, a new NHS investigation has revealed.
The NHS Foundation Trust, the largest of the five primary NHS trusts in the UK, said it would pay £3m ($4.7m) to help men who have a low sex drive and impotency problems.
The NHS Foundation Trust said: ‘We are now investigating the possibility that there may be a link between the use of the drugs sildenafil (Viagra), which are known to cause erectile dysfunction and the increased risk of heart failure and stroke, as well as the associated increased risk of dementia and stroke.
‘This could be because the drugs were taken by men who have high blood pressure or heart failure, or because sildenafil was taken by men who have a history of stroke or heart attack.
‘In some cases, this could have led to a potentially fatal condition called myopathy, a condition in which the muscles of the heart are damaged or inflamed, leading to symptoms such as chest pain or pressure.’
NHS England said: ‘We are now assessing the potential risks associated with these drugs and are awaiting the results of the ongoing National Health Service (NHS) Medicines Review and Assessment (NHS-MRA).’
Dr David Phillips, the NHS England spokesperson, said: ‘We are currently reviewing the potential risks and benefits of sildenafil (Viagra), which are known to cause erectile dysfunction and the associated risk of heart failure and stroke.
‘We are working with the MHRA to determine the best treatment approach to prevent and manage the impact of these risks on a person’s quality of life and to provide guidance to the public on the appropriate use of these drugs and to inform prescribing authorities of any associated health risks.
